Hummingbird Feeder Tips

Hummingbirds are a beautiful bird to have in your backyard.  Some   people may experience problems when trying to attract hummers to their yard. We have compiled a few great tricks and tips to use with your hummingbird feeder.  Here are a few good tips to remember when you are trying to attract hummingbirds to your house.

  1. Be sure to have your hummingbird feeder up and ready before the hummers arrive to your area.  This will help you keep the hummingbirds in your yard all season!
  2. Always make sure that your hummingbird feeder is clean.  A dirty hummingbird feeder can cause bacteria to grow, and in turn deter hummers from coming to your house.
  3. Clean your hummingbird feeder every 3-5 days, and even more frequent in hotter weather.
  4. Never use a harsh cleaner when cleaning your feeder.
  5. Make sure that you replace the nectar, not reuse.
  6. Try not to fill the hummingbird feeder more than ½ full.  The hummers will not have enough time to eat a full hummingbird feeder.
  7. Place your hummingbird feeder in an area where there are flowers that hummers like, or place some hanging flower baskets by your hummer feeder.  (Hummingbirds really like red flowers, but they will eat the nectar of other colored flowers as well.  Try to use tube flowers in baskets and surrounding areas.)
  8. Some hummingbirds are territorial, so use multiple hummingbird feeders to attract more hummingbirds to your garden.
  9. Try tying a red ribbon to your hummingbird feeder, hummingbirds seem to like the color red.

It is important to remember that hummingbirds like to eat natural nectar.  Don’t be discouraged if after the natural flowers in your garden die, the hummers slow down feeding at your hummingbird feeders.  Just use these hummingbird feeder tips and you are sure to have hummers in your garden this year!
