Hanging bird feeders can come in various different styles and shapes.  Hanging bird feeders that are squirrel proof are great to use, especially if you live where there are squirrels.  Squirrels love to eat bird seed, and like birds they think that you put it there for them to eat.  Squirrels can go though your entire hanging bird feeder and eat all of your bird seed.  Squirrels also can scare away the birds that you are trying to attract.  There are feeders that are designed for squirrels, if that is what you want. Squirrel proof hanging bird feeders often have triggers that only birds will be able to use.  If a wild bird lands on the perch, then some bird seed will come out of the opening.  A squirrel usually attacks a bird feeder from the top and therefore does not touch the perch and cannot access the bird seed.  Some hanging bird feeders that are squirrel proof will have a slanted top, so that the squirrel once again cannot read the feed portals.  Instead the squirrel just slides off and lands on the ground.  Another hanging bird feeder that is squirrel proof would be a globe bird feeder that has mesh around the bird seed.  Small birds can reach their beaks inside, whereas squires cannot reach their hands inside. Some squirrel proof hanging bird feeders may seem a little costly, but these bird feeders will defiantly pay for themselves with the bird seed that you will not have to replace every few days because of the squirrels.
